KUALA LUMPUR: Dubai-based wealth consultancy firm Nomad Capitalist has ranked Malaysia as its top destination for medical tourism.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said in a Facebook post today that Malaysia had outperformed competitors such as Singapore, India and Turkey.

"Alhamdulillah, Malaysia is now ranked number one globally as a preferred medical tourism destination," he said.

Dzulkefly said that in 2023, the country's medical tourism sector generated more than RM2 billion in revenue from 1.3 million foreigners seeking medical treatment here.

"This driven by confidence in the expertise of Malaysian doctors and nurses, our high standards of healthcare, and the unique combination of modern medical treatment, warm Malaysian hospitality and the noble values of Malaysian society.

"This achievement is the result of a collective effort by public and private healthcare workers, investors, and strategic partners who continue to enhance Malaysia's image as a global health hub," he added.

The minister also congratulated the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council for their dedication and hard work.

Dzulkefly said the Health Ministry remained committed to improving primary healthcare, accelerating digital transformation in the health system, and ensuring a fair, sustainable system that is prepared to face future challenges.

An article on the Nomad Capitalists website credits Malaysia's excellent health facilities and expertise, competitive costs and the wide use of English for its top ranking.

"Malaysia has built medical facilities that rival Singapore and offer much lower prices," the article said.

"At the same time, the country has set up agencies to attract hundreds of thousands of medical tourists for procedures for anything from burns to heart conditions."
